THE ICEBOX
MUSIC SERIES
(b. 2004)
The Icebox is a creative
music series based in
Columbus, Ohio founded in 2004. Icebox is committed to a big-tent philosophy of creative music, but admitt-edly our focus tends to be on free jazz and improvised music more so than other forms. However- stress- we are always open to doing different things.
We also have a definite focus on touring artists as there is a void in the city for creative music venues where touring artists can play. Nicole Mitchell, Tatsuya Nakatani, Andrew Lamb, Cuong Vu and Lukas Ligeti are a few of the notable artists we have presented. Many of our acts come from Chicago and New York, both epicenters of creative music. We also feature local special projects though, like the 7.29.05 Avant-Collective Reunion or the Elvin Jones tribute in December of '04.
We try to present at least two shows a month, and events are held at various locations in Columbus. Current venues that we call upon include Acme Art Co., Milo Arts, and the Columbus Music Hall.
Please support us as we continue to bring world-class creative and improv artists to Columbus. We currently have no outside donors or sponsors, so we abide by the faith that people will see that this is something worth supporting for it to keep going. There is currently nothing like the program- ming we offer elsewhere in the city, save for the occasional Wexner Center show. (and we have more fun at our shows...)
"He got hit by an Icebox....didn't even see it coming." (from Pinero)
A small invocation----
We are committed to bringing you quality creative music and supporting the artists who create it. Please help the cause in the meantime by spreading the news about what we're trying to do to your friends, family, and associates. We are offering some very unique shows for the area and hope that people will recognize this and support it in such a way for it to be able to persist, and to grow.
"Support creative music everywhere..."
Best,

JUNE 2ND ICEBOX SHOW:
Yuganaut to unearth The Lost World in sonic exploration of classic 1925 Harry Hoyt film.
- On June 2nd, Yuganaut, a Brooklyn- based progressive jazz trio (analog keyboards, bass, and drums) will perform live soundtracks to 1925 silent film classic THE LOST WORLD. This is the second installment of the newly begun Cinemuseica series of film/live music collaborations here in Columbus, hosted by the Drexel Grandview Theater. This particular show is being done as a joint production with The Icebox.
"The Lost World" is based on a short story by Arthur Conan Doyle, and was directed by Harry Hoyt. It was a direct precursor to the style and theme used by Hoyt in "King Kong", both futuristic and prehistoric. Over 50 robotic dinosaurs battle to the accompaniment of the U.S.'s premiere Multi-media jazz group, Yuganaut. Yuganaut will also unveil another 8 graphic scores, movies, films and visual delights, all contained in their new DVD project. The videos are sometimes narrative, such as Geoff Mann's lovely "Inside/Outside", a journey into Brooklyn by night, or Stephen Rush's "The River", a travelogue-like musing of his trips to the Ganges River, accompanied by Keith Jarrett-like free jazz. Abbs' works (like "Whacked in the Head") function as graphic scores that the audience views while the band plays. Children and adults have responded very positively to Yuganaut, a band that improvises freely, but invites the audience into their sound-explorations through the use of video. This show is suitable for all ages, and is as entertaining as it is insightful, both visually and musically.
